KINDERGARTEN - ZURICH

4 to 6 years

The children in Kindergarten delve deeper into their themed topics using enquiry based learning where they investigate, explore and make predictions about their topics. They are given tools to help them discover their own answers and are encouraged to use their discoveries to ask more questions, prompting further investigations. The children are given daily opportunities to discuss topics, role-play, and create stories to share in different languages.

CURRICULUM

Kindergarten children develop their social and emotional skills and are encouraged to actively reflect on their uses and choices of languages, as well as to notice the similarities and differences between them.

English reading and writing continues using the next steps of the UK program which was started in Pre-School. Reading and writing in German is introduced as well. Most children end their kindergarten years at Tandem IMS with a solid foundation in literacy skills and are ready to take on the challenge of furthering both reading and writing in two languages in first grade. The children are also introduced to numbers, the number system and basic mathematical concepts during their Kindergarten years to prepare them for the beginning of Primary School. Literacy and mathematical objectives in Tandem’s Kindergarten exceed those set for the Swiss public school system.

Other activities such as excursions, project weeks, nature walks, specialist art lessons, music, IT projects and gym will increase throughout Kindergarten 1 and 2.

LANGUAGES

With our «translanguaging» pedagogical approach, we introduce the kindergarten children to the daily use of multiple languages. English and German teachers spend approximately half the week co-teaching each class. Our aim is to support children in their ability to confidently interact in different languages, both in academic and social contexts. In kindergarten, children are provided with daily opportunities to discuss diverse topics, engage in role-play, and create stories to share in different languages. Within this framework, children often begin to question and investigate words and expressions in a language, encouraging them to further develop their language skills and work with various concepts.

All Kindergarten children also have the option of choosing French as an additional language.

WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS

Our daughter Milla started in Kindergarten 1 and finished in grade 6. We are so thankful to all the teachers, management and administration for the great work they do with the children. Tandem IMS offers a friendly environment and the warmth of a family. Milla had a lot of fun but she also learned a lot. She is not only academically strong in English and German and advanced in French but she developed as an individual who loves and respects people, who is independent and confident, who is free to express her opinion, who knows how to organize her daily life and work under pressure. As she said in her graduation speech: «Here in Tandem I had the best time of my life! I am looking forward to the future because I know I am well prepared for the next step of my life.»
