As pupils approach the end of primary school, parents often begin to consider the numerous
educational pathways available to them. At Tandem IMS, we recognise that each child has
unique needs, strengths, and aspirations. To support families in making informed decisions, we
have created a guide outlining the various options available to pupils after Primary 6.
Upon completing primary education, pupils can explore several options depending on their academic interests, learning styles, and career goals. In Switzerland, pupils have the
opportunity to pursue either academic or vocational pathways, each leading to fulfilling careers and further educational opportunities.
For those interested in a rigorous academic experience, the Swiss Gymnasium system offers a pre-university education with a strong emphasis on languages, sciences, humanities, and mathematics. Other pupils may prefer vocational pathways, which combine hands-on training with classroom learning, integrating apprenticeships with school-based education. Additionally, international school options provide globally recognised qualifications, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) or A-Levels, valued by universities worldwide.
We are delighted to announce the opening of the Tandem IMS Gymnasium in August 2025.
This exciting addition to our educational offerings provides pupils with a unique secondary
school experience, blending academic excellence with a forward-thinking approach to learning.
The Tandem IMS Gymnasium is designed for pupils who thrive in an inquiry-based environment and wish to build on their strong multilingual foundation. This programme extends beyond traditional academics, offering a curriculum that emphasises design, sustainability, and social responsibility. Pupils will engage in design and humanitarian studies alongside core academic subjects, fostering critical thinking and ethical awareness as they tackle real-world challenges.
In line with Swiss Matura requirements, our Gymnasium curriculum will equip pupils to excel academically while developing practical, hands-on skills through project-based learning, university exchanges, and work placements. This innovative approach ensures that pupils not only meet the academic benchmarks for higher education but also cultivate the creativity and empathy needed for meaningful community engagement and leadership.
The new campus in Küsnacht boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including design studios, science and technology labs. Each pupil will receive personalised guidance tailored to their academic goals and career aspirations, ensuring they are fully supported throughout their journey.
With this new offering, Tandem IMS opens yet another door for our pupils, giving them the choice to continue within our inquiry-based, multilingual framework or explore other options at local and international secondary schools.
1. The Swiss Gymnasium: A Traditional Academic Pathway
One of the most well-known routes in Switzerland is the traditional Gymnasium. After passing an entrance examination, pupils in this system follow a demanding academic programme for six years, ultimately preparing them for the Swiss Matura. This diploma grants access to Swiss universities and is recognised by institutions abroad. Exceptions are the medicine faculties in Switzerland for which an additional entrance exam is needed. Also to note that the Matura grades are not decisive for any Swiss university entrance—a pass is sufficient. However, grades may well be important for universities abroad.
Swiss Gymnasiums emphasise academic rigour and depth, with a structured approach that includes core subjects and electives. However, this traditional approach may not align with every pupil’s preferred learning style. For those who thrive in a more structured, knowledge-based environment, the Gymnasium can be an excellent choice, but some may find it less conducive to inquiry-based or creative learning.
2. International Options: A Global Approach to Education
For families seeking a global perspective, international schools in Switzerland offer a variety of programmes, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) or A-Levels. These programmes provide a broad, internationally recognised curriculum that emphasises critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding.
The IB programme, for instance, is inquiry-based and encourages pupils to take initiative in their learning. It is widely accepted by universities around the world and is known for its balanced approach to academics and extracurricular activities. Similarly, A-Levels allow pupils to specialise in subjects of their choice, providing a deeper focus in specific areas, which is ideal for pupils with clear academic interests.
3. Mainstream Secondary Schools and Vocational Pathways: Preparing for Future
Opportunities
Pupils typically complete their secondary education before pursuing vocational training or reapplying to a Gymnasium. Traditional secondary schools, both public and private, provide a comprehensive education that prepares pupils for various pathways. These institutions offer academic tracks that can lead to further education or allow pupils to specialise in areas that align with their interests.
After completing secondary school, pupils can choose to enter vocational programmes, which are highly regarded in Switzerland. These vocational training opportunities integrate apprenticeships with formal education, allowing pupils to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in fields such as engineering, healthcare, finance, and design. Completing a vocational programme can lead directly to employment or further studies at a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences), which offers more specialised academic training in various fields.
This pathway ensures that pupils are well-prepared for their future, whether they aim for
higher education or a direct entry into the workforce.
As you consider these pathways, remember that each option has its own strengths. Tandem IMS teachers are here to guide and offer advice based on each child’s individual needs, helping them navigate this pivotal stage in their education. Ultimately, the best choice will depend on your child’s unique strengths, interests, and aspirations.
Whether they opt for our new and unique Tandem IMS Gymnasium, the traditional Swiss Gymnasium, an international programme, or secondary school leading to a vocational path, we are confident that every child will find a pathway that enables them to thrive and pursue their dreams. At Tandem IMS, we are committed to supporting each pupil in becoming an open-minded, responsible, and creative thinker—ready to make a positive impact on their world.
